In short, these performances aimed toward 1) completion of a book containing a long poem contextualized by accompanying photographic documents, and 2) audio-vial documents (phototexts, photos, looped audio recordings) that may be exhibited later on.
What is the text then that seems to be at the heart of Street Smarts? It will be a series of transcribed conversations with local taxi drivers for the duration of a ride. Prior to transcription of course, conversations are to be recorded in audio. The poem or conceptual text will be highly improvisatory in this sense, interrogating the notion of multiple authorship: its textual tango between the artist and the cab drivers, and either of whom can take leadership in the conversation.
During the residency, performance as a language practice or its deceit will be mapped by inviting local artists whose works/practice traverses the literary, performative and visual boundaries through weekly readings, performances, screenings, installations and critical play. Street Smarts will run from August 13 to September 24.
Angelo Suarez, 23 graduated from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, where he is completing his Master's degree in Communication on a scholarship grant. Advocating collaborative verbo-visual performance and intermedia poetics, he co-authored the recently launched typographic project Dissonant Umbrellas: Notes Toward a Gesamtkunswerk with nine visual artists. He is also slated to release his fourth book in collaboration with veteran painter Emmanuel Garibay, titled Crux which problematizes the problem between image and language. He also wrote the poetry books else it was purely girls and The Nymph of MTV, for which he received the National Book Award from the Manila Critics Circle and the Bridges of Struga Poetry Prize from UNESCO and the Republic of Macedonia. He has also received prizes from the Maningning Miclat and Carlos Palanca Foundations for his poetry. Currently he works as an advertising copywriter and part-time teacher.
